Character Kings, a non-profit company, was formed in 2004 by Hal Sprechman. He has been teaching chess in Monmouth and Ocean County schools since 1992. In 2006, he was selected as Chess Coach of the Year by the New Jersey State Chess Federation.

Mr. Sprechman is a Senior Tournament Director with the United States Chess Federation and is on the board of directors of the New Jersey State Chess Federation. He is also the scholastic committee chairperson responsible for all scholastic tournaments organized by the NJSCF.

Hal's passion for teaching chess began when he taught his four year old son, Daniel, to play the game. By age 7, Daniel had been awarded first place in the New Jersey Scholastic Chess Championship.
